Differentiation Strategies (How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the needs of those with special needs?):

  • The lesson is designed to be a group effort. Learning styles will be considered when forming the groups that will work together.
  • Students with special needs will be companied by a resource teacher to help with the student’s part in the group project.

ENGAGEMENT:

I will begin by asking a few questions that will build into the introduction.

  1. Who here likes to play computer games?
  2. What if I told you we could play computer games and learn at the same time? Who would want to do that?

Today we are going to design a game to help us better understand healthy choices in life.

I will then play the Kahoot introduction video. https://youtu.be/yZvikyjgA1U

Once the video has been played I will then give them the game PIN for a quick introduction on how it works. This introduction game will contain a question about the teacher to be an ice breaker into how this tool works.

Everyone will be on their own computer in the computer lab.

I will then give them the instructions.

  1. Go to https://kahoot.com/
  2. Click on the “enter game PIN” at the top of the page.
  3. The game PIN is “7720351”
  4. Next type in your first name as the username to play
  5. Let’s begin the game.

Assessment

  • The assessment will be done on students entering the PIN and using their name to play. This will allow me to know if they understand how the process to play and use the game is understood.
  • What do you know about this tool?

EXPLORATION:

Once the class has completed the introduction activity we will then move on to the next part of the lesson.

I will now tell the class our next part.

I need everyone to stop what they are doing to listen for the next instructions.

I will know put you into groups of 3.

Once everyone is in their place I will move on to the instructions.

  • We are now going to do an activity that will allow you to explore kahoot and talk among your partners.
  • I want each group to explore the Kahoot website.
  • Learn about the different ways this tool can be used to help with learning.
  • Talk as a group and among yourselves decide what features and products you could use on this website that would make learning fun and understanding. Come up with two ideas you feel are the best offered by Kahoot and then list two questions that is a concern about Kahoot.
  • I will give you 10 minutes to do this and we will then move on to the next part of the lesson.
  • Please use this time to gain knowledge of Kahoot so that later in the lesson it will benefit your group.

I will then give the class 10 minutes to explore and talk about the things that can be used on Kahoot.

Once the 10 minutes are over I will then ask each group the best idea they have about Kahoot.

Next, I will ask each group what the two concerns are and have the class help answer the questions of concern.

Assessment

  • Each group will list an idea they have gain from the website and they also will list two questions of concern. As the teacher, this will allow me to clear up any concerns and also praise the new ideas.

EXPLANATION:

I will now so two videos on healthy choices.

https://youtu.be/6TUrNe8nWCw

https://youtu.be/91jxK5CsMT4

I am now going to ask them questions about healthy vs. unhealthy life choices.

  • Why is it important to make healthy choices?
    • Can anyone give me some examples?
  • Making healthy choices not only promotes good health but is a big benefit to a lot of things later in life. What are some things that would benefit you being healthy later in life? What are some negatives later in life if you are not healthy?
  • So we all agree that making good healthy choices is something that is important to our daily lives.

I will use the answers given by students to create a way to allow them to better understand the topic of this lesson. Healthy choices and the benefits you gain later in life.

  • As a group I want you to write down benefits to being healthy and write down some negatives if you choose not to eat healthily.
  • Make sure to keep these answers your group as wrote down we will need them later in the lesson.

We will then talk among ourselves what each group wrote down.

Assessment

  • What are you learning? This is a summative assessment.

ELABORATION:

Now let me go over the assignment for today's lesson that you will be doing in groups of 3.

  • You will create a free account as a group on the Kahoot website.
  • Use a group member’s school email to create an account.
  • Once the account is created you will create an 8 question game for the class to play.
  • We will have a total of 6 groups so we will play a total of 6 games at the end of class.
  • The questions you create on the game have to be related to the lesson of healthy choices.
  • You may research topics or questions to list.
  • Be creative and try to challenge the class with your questions to help us learn something new.
  • If you have any questions or need help please ask me.
  • I will give you 20 minutes to complete the assignment.
  • Make sure you remember the game pin so we will be able to play the game shortly.

I will give each group 20 minutes to complete the assignment. Once the time is up we will then turn to the projection screen to begin playing each group game. I will use this time to help talk about the good questions they are asking about the game. This will also allow me as the teacher at the end of the game to see the percentage of each question missed to recover that question if needed.

I will display my creation of Kahoot on the projection screen to help them understand what it should look like.
